BARKHAMSTED — The Barkhamsted Historical Society was recently granted an easement from the Metropolitan District Commission water agency( MDC) on the building located at Five Old Town Hall Rd. Called The Merrill Tavern, in step with a launch. This building completes the National Register for Historic Places ancient district, which incorporates the Center.
Schoolhouse, the First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted, the Church parsonage, the Old Town Hall, a house, and the Nathaniel Collins house, an 18th-century construction. This location, called Barkhamsted Center, turned into traditionally became the city’s focal point, having a school, tavern, cemetery, town hall, animal pound, and numerous houses. This vicinity changed appreciably with the construction of the Barkhamsted Reservoir inside the Nineteen Thirties. Since 2015, the society has been negotiating with MDC concerning this easement to allow members to hold the construction and incorporate it into programs at the side of the schoolhouse and the church. The Merrill Tavern was built approximately in 1814 by the Merrill family, who operated a Tavern and a shop. Along with the tavern, we have use of two outbuildings, which assist in alleviating our ongoing want for a garage.
“While we are glad about the new acquisition, we are also a bit worrying when faced with all that needs to be finished to stabilize the Tavern,” participants said in a declaration. “Our core organization of volunteers is small, and we are hoping new human beings can be inquisitive about supporting with its maintenance.
“We are having our Annual Meeting Sept. 14, 2 P.M. On the Center Schoolhouse, and then we will be having a strolling tour of the historical district, ending with an excursion to the Merrill Tavern,” the declaration reads. “We recognize you are curious. Please come and be part of us and notice what we need to do a good way to acquire the possibilities we foresee in the future.”

FiTMiX with Kathi©, a nicely-rounded beginner-to-intermediate exercise elegance, is held at First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 21 Fern Drive, Torrington, on Monday and Thursday evenings. The class offers 30 minutes of a spread of health modalities, including barre, HIIT, step, choreographed aerobics, weights, and stretching. This class is observed by using half an hour of “Pound,” a cardio-Pilates modality using weighted drumsticks. Both pieces of training are led by a certified fitness instructor and welcome all ages. The Torrington Democratic Town Committee is in search of candidates for this November’s municipal election.
