OKANAGAN, BC, June 12, 2019,/CNW/ – On June 15th, nearly 100 participants will gather at Waterfront Park in Kelowna to participate in the volunteer-led Light The Night Okanagan Community Walk. Patients, households, and their supporters will stroll in solidarity with lanterns raised to deliver help and wishes to the more than 138,000 Canadians stricken by blood cancers. This year marks the second annual stroll inside the Okanagan. Excitement abounds among the occasion volunteers in making this a unique occasion for absolutely everyone.
Olivia Mikkelsen, our venerated hero, may be among the ones attending this specific event in which the entire blood most cancers network comes together to celebrate, consider, and fan the flames of hope. At the younger age of two, Olivia was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). While in transit to Vancouver for remedy, she was given platelet transfusions and blood to survive the flight. Now, at 14 years old, Olivia’s remedies are smaller appointments, and happily, over time, and throughout recuperation, she’s turned out to be much stronger and healthier man or woman. At one point in her journey, 85% of her blood cells were strange, and she became simple, given 24 hours left to live. In 2018, over 35,000 Canadians raised over $5.9 million to assist fund world-class Canadian research and provide free help services for gratis to many blood cancer patients, survivors, and their families. At the Light, The Night Okanagan Community Walk, Olivia and her own family will be part of all of the contributors in team spirit to deliver light to the darkness of blood cancers. Each year, in groups throughout Canada, groups of families, buddies, and co-workers stroll into the nighttime, carrying illuminated lanterns to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada on the Light The Night Walks. These are life-threatening disorders, especially when not treated immediately. Here is some important information that you should know about these disorders.
Toxic shock syndrome, or TSS, is a fatal disease caused by bacterial toxins that circulate in the blood. This was first discovered in 1978 among young children. However, it only became known when an epidemic happened in 1981 among women who were using tampons. Caused by Staphylococcus bacteria, there are also risk factors that can predispose a person to have toxic shock syndrome. These risk factors include childbirth, foreign bodies such as the packings used to stop nose bleeding, surgery, tampons, infection of wounds, and barrier contraceptives like a vaginal sponge.
